Strangles Awareness Week is a global, collaborative effort to prevent and manage Strangles and in 2022 the Stamp Out Strangles campaign from Redwings Horse Sanctuary is back!

The campaign reached 2 million people in 2021 by organising webinars, running events on yards or by horse owners simply sharing their own experiences of Strangles on social media and listening to the Speak Out On Strangles Podcast.

Whether you are a leisure horse owner, an equine professional or a vet, you can make difference by signing up for #SAW2022 and help to spread the word and not the disease.

So join over 150 ambassadors from around the world today and get ready to #SpeakOutOnStrangles on the 2 – 8 May 2022!

Can we put a stranglehold on Strangles?
    Strangvac

Dr Kirstie Pickles BVMS MSc PhD CertEIM DipECEIM FHEA MRCVS

Strangles, the disease caused by the bacterium Strep. equi equi, was first recorded approximately 750 years ago. With over 600 outbreaks still occurring in the UK annually, it can be assumed this disease is not going to go away any time soon. Excitingly, however, there is a new weapon to help fight the battle. Strangvac®, a new vaccine developed by Swedish company Intervacc, is already available in Sweden and will be coming to the UK market within weeks.

The vaccine has been in development for almost 20 years and contains bacterial proteins but no live bacteria and is administered into the muscle like the flu vaccine. Two doses are given 4 weeks apart followed by a booster at 12 months. Clinical trials have shown that the vaccine is highly effective in protecting up to 94% of horses after this third dose. Additionally, Strangvac® will not interfere with the strangles ELISA test so a vaccinated horse can be differentiated from an infected horse.
